What’s more fun than receiving a postcard in the mail? Receiving a postcard you can eat, of course, which Ottawa-based Etsy shop Alicja Confections makes a reality.
Not being able to find a salted toffee chocolate bar that made the grade was a frustration that led Alicja Buchowicz to experiment with chocolate making. “That’s where that idea came from,” she explains. “I like salted toffee as a kid, but it was never salty enough.” Her handmade chocolate bars were immediately a hit, and when she was waiting to deliver a fresh one to a friend who wasn’t at her desk, Buchowicz grabbed an envelope and put the bar inside. And the idea of chocolate by post was born.
Buchowicz, who is in her twenties and makes her living selling her chocolate, sells 25 varieties of bars and wraps them in chic illustrations that are almost too good to open. One side is a themed drawing, think everything from oceanic to tropical scenes, while the other side has space for tales of your travels and the mailing address of your lucky recipient.
From the salty sweet Nicholas bar, with the perfect crunch of potato chips, to Tiger Butter, which is full of creamy peanut butter, vegan and gluten-free options like Dark Chocolate Lime Zest and Dark Chocolate and Coconut, the bars are made with simple ingredients and are packed in heat-sealed bags in a sturdy box so they arrive intact. Talk about sending good vibes.
