449 St. Helene St., Montreal, Que.
The Pitch A boutique hotel in Old Montreal, the Gault is sleek, upscale and friendly. With only 30 loft-style suites, this intimate property is ideal for couples seeking a romantic escape, or for business travellers wanting a calm comfortable setting. A 19th-century greystone façade with a classy contemporary interior makes this place eminently cool, and the multi-use lobby only adds to that. The space functions as reception area, restaurant/bar and lounge, so guests can settle into one of the brightly coloured Knoll chairs by the window to wait for a friend, order an espresso and croissant in the morning, or a glass of wine later in the day.
Suites range in size from 350 to 1,250 square metres, and feel airy and bright. The style is minimalist but the focus is on comfort, with Casa Novea linens on all the beds; features include a heated bathroom floor, and Molton Brown amenities. Some suites have a coveted private terrace, while two of the suites are full apartments.
The Gault is situated in the heart of Old Montreal, only minutes from the famous Notre Dame Basilica, the Montreal Conference Centre and Victoria Square. It’s also easily accessible to downtown Montreal by Metro and bus.
What We Love This is one of the smallest boutique hotels in Old Montreal, and is often booked to capacity, no doubt because of its warm, intimate feel: Staff greet guests by name, provide directions, make restaurant recommendations — and even help you put the pieces of your Nespresso machine back together when you inadvertently dismantle it.
It’s also worth taking time to check on the art, both nearby — at DHC/ART (showing a retrospective of American multi-media artist Joan Jonas from April 28 to Sept. 18) and the Musee d’Art Contemporain — and on property. Photos from local artists are on display in many of the public spaces of the hotel, and pieces, which rotate once or twice a year, are available for purchase.
Don’t Miss The hotel’s wellness packages. These include access to baths at Bota Bota and Scandinave les Bains, both great Scandinavian spas a short walk from Hotel Gault where you can move between saunas, steam rooms, cold plunge pools and relaxation areas. While the Scandinave is a stylish indoor spa, Bota Bota is, in part, outdoors. This floating spa was formerly a ferry boat that is now stationed at the Old Port. If you’re planning to go with a friend, note that silence is requested.
