The Pitch A luxury safari lodge, Camp Jabulani is situated on Kapama Private Game Reserve in Hoedspruit, South Africa, which is in close proximity Kruger National Park. With room for just a dozen guests, the family-owned lodge is comprised of six elegant suites and one villa suitable for a family or group. The property has a unique aesthetic, one that blends traditional grass-pressed mud walls and thatched roofs with modern design and timeless touches. Open concept common areas mean you’re getting optimum light, air flow and a peek into nature. You might, for example, spot a hippo sunning itself from the dining area windows. Each ultra-luxe suite comes with its own private plunge pool on the deck overlooking the reserve. A massive stone bathtubs, glass-enclosed outdoor shower and cozy living area complete with fireplace rounds out each spacious room. In addition to daily game drives and guided bush walks, guests can also interact with the property’s herd of rescue elephants, the very first of which, Jabulani, the lodge was named for.

What We Love The feeling of total privacy and access to nature. Suites are spread out so you can really appreciate the serene landscape of the reserve, ideally from your suite’s plunge pool. But since you’re not just here to relax, you’ll want to get out on safari, a must for anyone staying at the lodge. Guides take you out onto the reserve in open-air vehicles for an incredibly good shot at catching sight of the Big 5 (buffalo, lion, elephant, rhino, leopard). Evening safaris are capped off with sundowners — drinks and snacks against the backdrop of a vibrant sunset.

Don’t Miss Hanging out with the lodge’s herd of elephants, who all have their own unique story and personality. The herd is free to roam the reserve but tends to spend time closer to the lodge and handlers provide guests with a good overview of their history on the property and how they’re cared for on a day-to-day basis. And the perfect way to cap off the experience is by drinking in the scenery and some chilled rose on the property’s expansive deck.

Suites start at R12,500 per person sharing, including all meals, snacks and beverages
