The Pitch  While Park City, Utah might be better known thanks to its glam film festival, Sundance, just a 30-minute drive away a lesser known city is on the rise thanks to the recently re-imagined resort Zermatt. Nestled in Midway, inside the Heber Valley, Zermatt is ideal for travellers looking for serenity, hiking and wellness. The lodging, which ranges from hotel rooms to suites to “Chateau” villas, which include a full kitchen and fireplace, are old-school luxe Europe. Reminiscent of resorts in Switzerland, the property boasts a wet and dry sauna, indoor-outdoor pool, spa and fitness centre. For the kids, there’s also mini golf, a carousel and goat feeding.

What We Love The resort has two restaurants, but the real bonus is a full bakery, specializing in European sweet treats, that offers guests a range of pastries and sandwiches made in-house fresh each morning. Taking inspiration from the Swiss coffee haus tradition, at Bäckerei and Eis you’ll find fruit tarts, choux and house-made gelato.

Don’t Miss The natural phenomena located on Zermatt’s property makes any visit a truly mystical experience. The world’s only calcium-domed “crater” is a stand-out. The 10,000 year-old “crater” is home to a natural hot spring that maintains a year-round temperature of approximately 32 C. The waters are deep, plunging down to about 65 feet. Visitors can don life jackets and float in the natural healing waters, and in the winter, the experience is particularly other-worldly since the cold air above the warm water creates a rather dense fog all around. In the spring, the crisp air makes for an invigorating contrast. Scuba diving is also permitted.

Rooms from US$150 per night
