Old meets new with incredible views at the Fairmont Pittsburgh

Fairmont Pittsburgh
510 Market St., Pittsburgh, Penn.

The Pitch Situated by the point where the Alleghany, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers meet, the Fairmont Pittsburgh boasts prime views — and a location in the heart of the city’s downtown. A striking glass and steel structure that features local artists’ work throughout, the property embodies an art-meets-industry ethos that nods to the city’s past while reflecting Pittsburgh’s recent renewal.

Despite its modern exterior and decor, the newly built (2010) Fairmont Pittsburgh is firmly rooted in the city’s history. In the 1800s, the 1.5-acre site of what is now Three PNC Plaza, which contains the hotel, was home to a German boarding house, a steam cabinet-maker’s shop and a toy store, among other businesses. During excavation, archaeologists recovered more than 26,000 artifacts, which tell a tale of the city’s early commerce and immigrant life. A large sampling of the items is on permanent display in museum-quality cases in the hotel (an audio tour is available via cell phone).

What We Love The luxurious hotel is within walking distance of everything from restaurants, cafés, theatre and nightlife to PNC Park and the must-see Andy Warhol Museum, just across the Alleghany. During the day take a stroll and discover the area with Edie, the hotel’s canine ambassador, a sweet boxer-lab mix available for walks (appointments necessary). Also nearby are the Strip District and Lawrenceville neighbourhoods. The Strip, a historic market area, features Old World and early 19th-century architecture, and is full of specialty shops, grocers, antique stores and restaurants, which locals love for the selection and low prices and I appreciated for the unique experiences and friendly, local vibe.

On site at the property, enjoy light fare and cocktails from a seasonally crafted menu at Andy’s Wine Bar, located in the Fairmont’s spacious lobby. Or head upstairs to Habitat Restaurant, and ask for a seat at the massive communal table that has a view to the open kitchen on one side, and the city on the other.

Don’t Miss The 6,000-square-foot spa and fitness centre. You’ll find full spa services, daily yoga, Pilates and spin classes, a eucalyptus steam room and cedar saunas, and even personal trainers on staff, plus floor-to-ceiling windows that offer great city views and ample opportunities to people-watch. It’s the perfect place to keep your fitness schedule on track while on the road, or to simply unwind with a signature body treatment after a day exploring the city.
